Tagore Award Ceremony at India House

On 22nd May, 2014 the Embassy of India in collaboration with the Stockholm International School(SIS) organised the 2nd Tagore Award Ceremony at India House, Stockholm. This award, given for the best personal project in Grade-X of the school, was instituted last year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore winning the Nobel Prize.

The event started with a documentary film on Rabindranath Tagore made by Public Diplomacy Division of the Ministry of External Affairs to celebrate the 150th Birth Anniversary of the Poet Laureate. Ambassador Mrs. Banashri Bose Harrison spoke about the universal and timeless nature of the Poet’s work. The programme included some Tagore poems sung by the well-known Rabindra Sangeet exponent Ms. Shipra Nandy. Thereafter, the children joined her in singing Tagore’s famous poem “Ekla Cholo Re”. The Tagore Award consists of a selection of books written by the poet and a certificate.

The Embassy instituted an additional Essay composition this year on “Impressions of India”.

Thanking the Embassy for instituting the Award, Secondary school Principal Mr Kevin Munro said "I loved the positive message of Tagore that you (Ambassador) gave to our students and the challenge to be like him. The school really appreciates the continued cooperation with the Indian Embassy and yourself (Ambassador). The hospitality and friendliness is noticed and valued by us. The whole event (including their lovely food) was memorable for the students and staff involved".

The Tagore Award is an essential inspiration to all students in grade 10 when completing their Personal Project. During the year, it is the star that they reach for and that keeps the perseverance up at difficult times. When project is complete and the students realize that they have accomplished more than they thought was possible, they say: \"I did really well, I believe that I will win the Tagore Award.\" The wonderful evening of the Tagore Award is very generous prize given to all the students in grade 10, their parents and the staff of SIS.
