Ambassador Hosts Roundtable On 'Business And Research & Development Opportunities In Gujarat'

Ambassador Hosts Roundtable on ‘Business and Research & Development Opportunities in Gujarat’ with Dr Vijayraghavan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology and Mr. P K Taneja, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries and Mines), Government of Gujarat

A Breakfast Roundtable meeting to present the business and R &D opportunities in Gujarat’ was hosted by Ambassador Banashri Bose Harrison at the India House in Stockholm on 2 September 2016. Mr. P K Taneja, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries and Mines), Government of Gujarat showed a short film followed by a presentation giving information about the state’s development and future plans. He described the robust physical and urban Infrastructure of Gujarat and mentioned that the state ranked #1 in ‘Ease of Doing Business 2015’ and achieved the top spot amongst all states in DIPP & World Bank’s EODB Index. He also mentioned that Gujarat secured #1 rank as per the NCAER State Investment Potential Index (SIPI), which evaluated each State on 5 key pillars like labour, infrastructure, economic conditions, political stability & governance, perceptions of a good business climate. He highlighted that Gujarat has consistently been among the top 5 FDI recipients, mainly in Infrastructure and Manufacturing and urged Swedish companies to explore the emerging opportunities in auto and auto components, chemicals and petrochemicals, agro and food processing and aerospace and defence sectors, which the state was now focusing on. He informed that Gujarat aims to be a preferred investment destination for Swedish companies and offers the right facilitation with all major clearances or approvals provided online. He concluded by inviting Swedish companies to participate in the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2017, to be held in Gujarat from 10-13 January 2017.

A brief presentation was made thereafter by Dr. K. Vijay Raghavan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology regarding the Government’s plans to promote and embrace innovation in the society and the economy. He urged Swedish companies to take advantage of the India’s strength in human resources to carry out more R & D activities in India and to focus on finding solutions to the challenges that the country was facing.

The Roundtable was attended by about twenty senior representatives of a number of Swedish companies, which included ABB AB, Atlas Copco, Ericsson, Sandvik, Saab, Gunnebo, Energeotek AB, Boliden, Scania and Stora Enso.

The presentations were followed by a short remarks by the participating Swedish companies, most of which are already operating in different parts of India, They briefed about their technological strengths and their interest in expanding their operations in India. The event concluded with an interaction, which was moderated by Mr. Robin Sukhia, Secretary-General, Sweden-India Business Council (SIBC). Ms. Sumita Mukherjee Joint Secretary & Financial Advisor, Department of Biotechnology; and Dr. Shailja Vaidya Gupta, Director, Department of Biotechnology, also participated in the discussions.
