Instructions relating to submission of OCI and OCI Misc. Service

From 23rd November, 2015, all applicants for registration as OCI cardholder or for OCI Miscellaneous services are requested to follow the procedure mentioned below:

i)The applicant shall submit the application forms online (https://passport.gov.in/oci)and upload the requisite documents (self-attested), photograph and signature (in the case of minors who cannot sign, left hand thumb impression) along with the application.

ii) Originals of the supporting documents must be submitted to the Embassy for prior verification.

Applications for registration as OCI Cardholder is to be submitted on the online system. The same should be submitted to the embassy for verification.

For this purpose, please log on to https://passport.gov.in/oci.

Documents to be submitted with the application for Fresh OCI applications:

Print out of the Online Registration form.

Proof of present citizenship – Copy of present valid passport (applicable in all cases), with validity of minimum 6 months at the time of submission of application.

Evidence of Indian origin:

(a) Being a citizen of India at the time of, or at any time after the commencement of the Constitution i.e. 26.01.1950; or

(b) Being eligible to become a citizen of India at the time of commencement of the Constitution i.e. 26.01.1950; or

(c) Belonging to a territory that became part of India after 15th August, 1947.

 These could be:

(i) Copy of the cancelled Indian Passport; or

(ii) Copy of the Domicile Certificate issued by the Competent Authority; or

(iii) Copy of Nativity Certificate from the competent authority; or

(iv)  Evidence of relationship as parents/grandparents, if their Indian origin is claimed as basis of grant of OCI*

* If parents/grandparent’s origin is being claimed as basis for grant of OCI, the following documents are required:

1. Those who are claiming OCI card based on parent´s origin, their birth certificate showing their parents name is required.

2. If you are claiming Indian origin based on your grandparent´s origin, then you must submit your birth certificate as well as your parent´s birth certificate showing parents name clearly so that it establishes the relationship with your parents and grandparents.

3. Copy of their Indian passports or OCI cards

4. Copy of their domicile certificate issued by the competent authority; or any other documentary evidence like Apostilled copy of school certificate, land ownership certificate by which eligibility can be logically established. Whether to accept the proof submitted would depend on the Consular Officer.

5. Familjebevis from Skatteverket

In case of minor child whose both parents are citizens of India or one of the parents is a citizen of India –

(i) Copy of child’s birth certificate

(ii) Copy of Indian passport of one of the parents / copy of OCI card of one of the parents/ copy of the Domicile Certificate or Nativity Certificate issued by the Competent Authority in respect of the parents/ one of the parents or any other proof substantiating the status of the parents/ one of the parents as being Indian citizen(s).

(iii) If the parents are divorced, court order of dissolution of marriage, which specifically mentions that the legal custody of the child is with the parent who is applying for the OCI card.

Evidence as spouse of foreign origin of a citizen of India or spouse of foreign origin of an OCI Cardholder –

(i) Registered marriage certificate; should be translated in English if it is any other language

(ii) Marriage certificate should be Apostilled if issued in India, otherwise notarized

(iii) In the case of spouse of an Indian citizen - copy of the Indian Passport of the spouse or copy of the Domicile Certificate or Nativity Certificate issued by the Competent Authority in respect of the Indian spouse or any other proof substantiating the status of the spouse as being an Indian citizen.

(iii) In the case of spouse of an OCI Cardholder - Copy of the present valid Passport of the spouse and copy of the OCI Card of the spouse.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU NEED TO RENOUNCE YOUR CITIZENSHIP BEFORE FILLING THE OCI APPLICATION. BOTH THE APPLICATIONS CAN NOT BE ACCEPTED AT THE SAME TIME.

Specifications for Photograph

Photograph to be affixed on the application should be of square shape of size not less than 51x 51 mm (with 80% coverage of face). It should have plain light color background or white background without the border with front view of person’s head and shoulders showing the full face in middle of the photograph. It should not be stapled and should not have any signature.

Note: Photographs that do not conform to the above standards will be rejected and may cause delay in processing the applications.

1) If there is any deficiency in the application/uploaded documents/photograph, the Embassy will inform the applicant by email.  The applicant may then submit the required documents to the Embassy, who will take necessary action to upload the same on the online system.

2) When the application is uploaded after verification of documents and processed by the Embassy, the applicant will get an auto email informing ‘Application received and is under process’.  Thereafter, the originals of the supporting documents will be returned to the applicant.

3) If any applicant has to renounce his/her Indian citizenship, the application for renouncing of Indian citizenship should be submitted separately before applying for OCI card.

4) Applicants who may have difficulty in filling up the applications forms online are welcome to come the Embassy with prior appointment so that they can be given necessary assistance.  The telephone numbers and email address for requesting an appointment are given below:
