Preparations for celebration of International Day of Yoga 2016 in Riga

The first International Day of Yoga (IDY) was celebrated successfully in Riga on June 21, 2015.  To prepare for the celebration of IDY 2016 on an even bigger scale, a brainstorming session was held in Riga on Saturday, 27th February 2016 which was attended by around 70 participants from the main yoga schools, associations and institutions in Latvia.  Leading members of the Indian community also participated in the meeting which was a joint initiative of the Indian Embassy and the IDY Organization Committee chaired by Ms. Agita Baltgalve, Director of theCentre of Indian Studies and Culture at theUniversity of Lativa.

In her opening remarks, Ambassador Banashri Bose Harrison spoke about the universal nature of Yoga, India's gift to the world, which promoted global peace and harmony. She thanked all the participants for sparing time on a weekend to attend the brainstorming session and sought their support for IDY 2016.  She also introduced the Embassy officials who would be involved in the event.

The chair and some Members of the IDY Organization Committee shared their thoughts and plans for IDY 2016 with the participants.  A lively discussion followed thereafter in which new ideas emerged.

It was decided that IDY wold be celebrated on June 21 as a full-day event with yoga sessions and cultural performances.  Further, children should be encouraged to take part through a drawing competition. It was also proposed that as IDY almost coincided with the Solstice day which is celebrated as a festival of light and joy, the celebration should include performance connected to this Latvian festival.  Finally, some participants from outside Riga expressed their interest in celebrating IDY in other places in Lativa, in particular Daugavpils, the second largest city in the country.

All the participants thanked the organizers for this useful meeting and conveyed their full support for ensuring the success of IDY 2016.
